The explosion of a commercial airliner over Iowa in 1962 is the topic of Iowa author Enfys McMurry most recent book, “Disaster at 39,000 Feet.” McMurry will discuss her book Friday, Nov. 1, at 2:30 pm at First Presbyterian Church in Jefferson.
McMurry is a native of Wales. She studied at the University of London, the University of Arizona, and Truman State University. She taught English at Indian Hills Community College in Centerville for 23 years.
“Ms McMurry’s extensively researched, minute by minute account of the final moments of Continental Airlines Flight 11 is both riveting and somber,” said Captain Craig G. Gray (retired), nephew of Captain Fred R. Gray, pilot in commander of Flight 11. “The tragic event of May 22, 1962, is the story of an unwitting aviation industry of a deranged man, and of a rural community unselfishly coming to the aid of strangers. But most of all, it is a story of families forever shattered and the precious lives lost that dark and stormy night.”
The author talk is open to the public. Refreshments will be served. McMurry’s book will be available for purchase.
